Hot 10

Hot 10

Our very own Design Billboard, Hot 10 Trends happening in Surface Design right now. DJ, hit that beat....
  1. Retro-florals
Last year it was the 60's and 70's groovy, hippie, love vibe doing the rounds. 2024 is said to be more about that mid-century 50's and 60's feel, moving into the Gothic Floral era. Dark, moody, romantic. Colourful full patterns against dark, rich textured fabric. Think embroidered tapestry with golden threads mixed with Eva Green style vampire chic.
  1. Lashings of Lace
Lace made a return to the runways in 2023 but in 2024 the influence of lace is making it's way into surface design with features of lace-like patterns and repeats overlayed with lace texture. A unique and interesting treatment that gives a softness and complexity to designs. Again, a bit of a retro 80's nod with touching of Madonna's black lace gloves and lace overlays.
  1. Traditional Geometrics
I'm not sure geo's ever truly go out of style do they? Traditional Geometrics such as herringbone are featuring in unique places such as wallpapers and rugs. Particular those sacred geometry elements circles and triangles used in unique and interesting ways.

  1. 1980's Chintz
I could personally do with a little less 80's inspo to be honest. I don't think it was anyone's best fashion era, but 1980's Chintz is back baby. Chintz usually refers to those floral pops of colour on light natural backgrounds. Usually small, scattered design elements though some of the patterns we're seeing at the moment are bolder than previous decades.
  1. Wild Animal
Not so much about the animals themselves, but our traditional animal prints twisted and turned inside out and back again. Leopard, tiger, snakes, cheetah all in vivid and unexpected colour ways. I love a good leopard and add that to a good burnt orange or electric blue and that's a winner in my books. Despite the fact that I once had a colleague refer to my animal print skirt as 'not hookerish at all'. Lol true story and still my favourite compliment of all time.
  1. Smudgy Spots
You all know I love mark making and inky smudges and textured continue to be all the rage in 2024. Think painterly smudges or rough, hand printed polka dots with an earthy edge. Just the way we like it.
  1. Elegant Damask
Rock Goddesses love a bit of royal decadence paired with our favourite vintage band tees. I don't know why but it works. Intricate gold filigree and deep romantic colours. Velvet smooth, ruby garnet like your favourite red wine drunk out of ancient chalices.
At Sunshine & Pineapples, Paradisio is our nod to elegant damask trend.
  1. Punk Plaids

It literally chokes me to call the 90's vintage or retro...truly. Wasn't it yesterday? Grunge is in and with it comes those gorgeous plaid and tartan patterns paired with your dirtiest denims. It's your Dad's flannel shirts over black tights and short skirts. Is it a trend if it's your everyday uniform?
  1. Patchwork Patterns
I am in such love with this trend. It reminds me a Alexander McQueen and our beloved Supermodels. Of Anna Sui lush fantastical creations conjuring the smell of rose, incense and patchouli swirling together into the most heady mix. Pairing together uniquely quirky combinations of fabric, treatments and patterns to create something truly extraordinary. Makes me heart race and my head spin.
If you want to learn more about the great Alexander McQueen I highly recommend this book Unseen by Robert Fairer . Such a visual delight.

  1. Natural World
No matter what trends are happening across the globe Sunshine and Pineapples always tends to go back to inspiration from Country and the natural world. 2024's trend continues the love affair with botanicals and earthy, muted tones. Nothing inspires like nature.
